VRH Arrival

Registration

Your admission to Valley Regional Hospital has been arranged by your doctor.

Patient registration occurs in the Main Lobby at Central Registration. Upon arrival, please report to the Information Desk where a hospital volunteer will provide you with further direction.

Things to Bring

If you are entering the hospital as a patient, you should bring the following:

  • Your Health Card.
  • Other health insurance cards (e.g., Blue Cross, Maritime Medical).
  • Your red hospital identification card, if you have been a patient previously at the hospital. If you are new to the hospital, an identification card will be issued to you at the Central Registration in the Main Lobby.
  • The medication you are currently taking or a list containing names of drugs and dosages.
  • A list of any known allergies and sensitivities.
  • Night attire, bathrobe and slippers.
  • Personal toiletries, such as your toothbrush, toothpaste, hairbrush or comb and shaving equipment. (The Apple Gift Shop carries a small number of personal items.)
  • A small amount of money for miscellaneous purchases (no more than $20.)
  • Reading material.
  • Information Handbook for Patients and Visitors.

Accommodation

The hospital offers three types of accommodation:

Standard Ward – Four beds per room
Semi-private – Two beds per room
Private – One bed per room

Due to high occupancy rates, it is not always possible to provide your preference of accommodation; however, every attempt will be made to transfer you to your requested accommodation if it becomes available.

There is a daily rate for semi-private or private rooms which may be covered if you have private health insurance. Standard ward rates for eligible residents of Nova Scotia are covered by the Department of Health through Medical Services Insurance.

Newspapers

A complimentary copy of The Chronicle-Herald newspaper (covered by private health insurance), delivered every day right to your room will ensure you’re aware of what’s happening in your community and throughout the world. Local newspapers can be purchased at the Information Desk in the Main Lobby.

Televisions

A personal 20-inch colour television with cable services. Personal television service is provided by VISTACARE at a daily rate. A representative is available from 4:30 pm to 6:00 pm daily. Payment is by Visa, MasterCard, cheque or cash. Since some residential style television sets do not conform to hospital safety standards, their use is not permitted. (The cost of the television is covered by private health insurance.)

Telephones

A gift certificate is provided toward a personal telephone for your room so you can enjoy conversations with friends and loved ones whenever you like.

Bedside telephone service is available on each unit except Detox, Intensive Care and Psychiatry.

There are initial associated costs which include hookup, daily fee and any additional charges for long distance calls. All billing is directed by MTT to your home telephone number. Once you have been admitted, easy access instructions will tell you how to activate the service.

Patients can receive calls at 679-3315 (Patient Line) from 7:30 am to 10:00 pm.

Pay telephones are located at the entrances to the main lobby, emergency department, patient units, cafeteria, and administration offices.
